troubleshooting and repairing device drivers
Device drivers can cause problems, conflict,s and instabilities with Windows. This is just
something we’ve become accustomed to over the years. The driver creation model used for
Windows 8, however, is by far the most robust in the life of the OS and, as such, it is only
poorly written drivers that cause problems and issues. Despite this reliability and robustness,
however, many IT departments like to soak test drivers on an isolated machine before deploying them.
One of the reasons why this is a good idea, assuming you even have a spare machine
available, is that even drivers that come through Microsoft’s Windows Update service aren’t
immune and can cause blue screens or instabilities, and this is something I’ve seen several
times on my own computers.
I’m a great fan of the motto “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” and when a driver works, there’s
no need to update it, certainly not manually. Let’s spend a little time though looking at how
we can repair drivers if something does go wrong.
